History of Florence & Other Highlights...
The human history of the Florence area starts with the first inhabitants, the Siuslaw Indians.  Similar to other tribes in the Pacific Northwest, the Siuslaw tribe lived in a land of plenty.  Their life revolved around the Siuslaw River, the ocean, and the forest.  Subsistence included fishing, clamming, and hunting for dear, elk, and bear, as well as collecting wild berries.  The population of the Siuslaw was seriously impacted in the early 1800's, when many people in the tribe contracted smallpox. The following are some links to more Siuslaw Indian history:

Although Spanish galleons sailed the Pacific Northwest coast and Captain Cook is reported to have explored the region, it wasn't until about 1850 that white settlers came to the Florence area.

By 1882 the town had grown to no more than a few wood houses inhabited by the Siuslaw Indians, some Chinese workers from San Francisco, and a limited number of white settlers, who were primarily sustained through logging and fishing.  The main point of interest was a small general store owned by a man named A. J. Moody.

By 1900, Florence had a population of around 300 and the town boasted a lumber mill, two canneries, two general stores, a general store and a weekly newspaper.

Today Florence is a bustling town of over 7,000 residents and has been rated the number 1 retirement community in the United States.  Florence provides many outdoor recreational activities among the beautiful scenery of forest and the ocean's edge once enjoyed only by it's original inhabitants. The heritage of Florence lives on in the restored historic buildings of Old Town Florence.   Other links to stories about the history of Florence are as follows:
