Area Photo Tour & Information ...
The Florence area is probably the most scenic on the Oregon Coast.  The region is dominated by beautiful forest, fresh water lakes, rivers, and of course sand and beaches.  This page is intended to give you a brief photo tour of the Florence area.

The Florence Waterfront

Florence is actually located about three miles up from the mouth of the Siuslaw River, where the river meets the ocean.  Thus the Florence harbor is really a freshwater tidal harbor situated on the river.

Shown here is a picture of Mo's Restaurant, with fishing boats and and old paddle boat moored alongside.

Where the Forest  Meets the Sand & Sea!
About 10 miles north of Florence, near the famous Sea Lion Caves, the Oregon coast becomes rugged and picturesque.

This photo was taken along Highway 101 and is looking south towards Florence.  Highlighted are the expansive beaches in the Florence area, shown here at low tide.

The Historic Florence Bridge

Highway 101 passes into Florence from the south over the scenic and historic Florence bridge.

The bridge spans the Siuslaw River, and it is show here highlighted by a blooming Quince bush in the spring.

Entrance to Old Town

Starting with historic and scenic Old Town, the Florence area is a unique vacation and living experience!

The entrance to Old Town, located in southern Florence along the Siuslaw River, is highlighted by fabulous blooms of rhododendrons in the spring.

Old Town
Old Town is known for it's artistic fishing village-like setting at the mouth of the Siuslaw River.

It combines interesting shopping and fine dining in the many small boutiques, galleries, and restaurants along the waterfront.

Lakes and Rivers!

The Florence area boasts 27 fresh-water lakes and the Siuslaw River within 6 miles of Florence!

Activities vary from clamming to superb fishing and water skiing.  This picture is of a rotating train bridge located about 4 miles up the Siuslaw River from Florence.  Just southeast of this location is where the North Fork of the Siuslaw joins the main Siuslaw River.

Florence Beaches
The beaches in the Florence area, and extending to the south are expansive and allow for all the great beach activities, including just playing in the sand or taking a relaxing stroll amongst the dunes and numerous sea birds that populate the coastal areas.

This is a picture of the beach near the North jetty in Florence.

Florence Harbor

This photo is of the harbor in Florence on the Siuslaw River in Old Town.

You can watch the fireworks on the 4th of July or moor or launch your boat here during the salmon fishing season in September and October.

Freshwater Lakes

The Florence area boast 27 fresh water lakes formed by drifting sands just east of the ocean front.  These lakes offer boating, fishing and great locations for a picnic or a lake front home.

This photo is of a fisherman fishing in tiny Clewox Lake located in Honeymen State Park just south of Florence.

Fishing

It is said that many fish in the area will grow old never seeing a fisherman's lure!

Opportunities including fishing in serene Lake Merced (shown here), or salmon fishing either in the great Siuslaw and Umpqua Rivers or offshore in the ocean.

National Dunes Recreation Area!
The National Dunes Recreation area, which borders Florence and extends to the South) provides the opportunity for almost unlimited entertainment.

Bring your own ATV, rent one, or take a wild dune buggy ride on a commercial excursion. There is no doubt that the National Dunes Recreation Area is great for the entire family.

Wild Rhododendrons

The Florence area is unique botanically, but perhaps the most spectacular are the wild rhododendrons, which provide a stunning under-canopy in the forest starting in early May and extending through June.

These wild rhododendrons are typically soft pink in color and provide a spectacular contrast to the dense green rain forest vegetation.

The Beach and Sand Dunes!

The essence of the coast, the beaches in the Florence area are accessible, wide, and backed by sand dunes with all the associated beach recreation for the kids.

Activities include kite flying, dune buggy rides, and sand castle building!  If you're lucky, you may catch sight of a whale offshore!

Winchester Bay!

Located about 20 miles south of Florence, Winchester Bay offers shopping, sightseeing, an oyster farm, and charter fishing for salmon.  You can even rent a crab pot and try your luck for delicious Dungeness crabs.

Winchester Bay is a great place to visit during the day and you can dine of fine seafood while watching activities in the harbor.

Whale Watching!

Whale watching is a favorite sport, particularly in the winter and early spring when the great gray whales migrate along the Oregon coast!

There are a number of roadside stops in the area that provide telescopes for a better view, including the Umpqua River Whale Watching Station located at the southern tip of Winchester Bay.

Wildlife Viewing
The Florence area offers fabulous bird and other wildlife viewing up and down the coast.

You can also watch a splendid herd of Roosevelt Elk (the Western US coastal elk Species) just west of Reedsport located about 22 miles south of Florence along Highway 101.

  The Florence Rhody Day Parade
Florence is known for its numerous activities, including perhaps the best, the "Rhody" Day parade in late May.

This is the time when wild and domestic rhododendrons abound in a fabulous display of color throughout the town and under the forest canopy!
